LO1: Report comparing audio media products

Name: Harry Swallow                                                                                               Date: 08/10/2014
Unit 19 Planning and pitching an audio media product
In unit 19 for my creative and digital media course I have to research and the make a comparative repot based on my research on five different types of audio media product. Then research a further two on the audio media product that we wished to make. The media audio product that I did research on was Jingle, Podcast, Music Radio Show, Ident and an Audio Book. The Jingle I chose to do was Hallam FM’s, The Podcast I researched was The Weekly Planet, The Ricky Gervasis Show and Charlie sloth. The Music radio show was Big John @ Breakfast and the Ident I looked at was the MacDonald advert and the audio book.
The purpose
The purpose of The Weekly Planet is entertain, educate, inform and review the latest comic books, comic movies and comic book related TV and just anything that has something to do with comics. I know it is for the purpose of inform as the two host (James & mason) talk about the latest news from the past week. The most common at the moment are about the comic films Batman vs superman and the Avengers 2 Age of Ultron. They entertain by telling stories from there life or they know a comical fact about the topic they are talking about. They educate the listener by talking about obscurer fact or Trivia. This tends to be more for Marvel than any other comic book films. They also tend to review a comic film about two week after it comes out. This is good as it gives them time to let the film sink in and give a good opinion on the film. They also talk about other big block buster films that are not based on comic books but they always be on a film that is not based on real events or set in the real world.
In comparison the Ricky Gervasis Show is very similar as they also look to entertain the audience but The Ricky Gervasis does not look to inform the listener. It looks to educate the viewer because they talk about thing that have been talked about for hundreds of years. Such as when they ask Karl about what he thinks of a profound praise or when they talk about a problem with in the world and way that it can be fixed. I suppose that there is somewhat inform in there as they do talk about current events but it tends to be very obscure or very strange to the point where you have to question if it is real. It is a different type of entertainment The Weekly Planet is based on them making fun of what experience they have same as The Ricky Gervasis Show but the focus of their comedy is different. The focus of the Ricky Gervasis show is making fun of Karl and the Weekly Planet is based on the topic or making fun of what they say and if they don’t know what they are on about.
Something that is far different is the McDonalds Ident. The purpose for the audio product is to make a noise that will make you automatically identify with a product. The ident may entertain you but I think it is aimed at children because of the soft tone used. This is very different to the other because they are meant to entertain this does that as well to a point but what they what to do is sell a product. They what people to come and buy their food and the ident is aimed at children so that they make their parents take them.
Something that is similar to the Ident is a jingle for Hallam FM I looked at. The purpose of the audio media product is to say what radio station you are listening to and promote the brand. I would imagine it’s for people radio hopping.
The purpose of big john @ breakfast is to entertain and informs. I know it’s for that purpose because Big John all ways try’s to make you laugh. He does this by making fun of the people who ring up. Not in a mean way he makes fun of their story’s when he ask for the listener to come on and talk about your experience.

The last thing that I will talk about are audio books. Audio books is an audio media product that is meant to entertain. The audio book was made to help blind people. It is most commonly used now for drivers to listen to something when they are on long drives. Depending on the book you choose it can be entertaining and informative. There is a narrator that does the voices and some time they have multiple people doing the voices.

Form and style
The form of the podcast The Weekly Planet is informal as they talk in an informal way as they swear and use slang. This is similar to the radio music talk show Big John @ Breakfast as they are also informal but do not swear as it is on early morning and would not be child friendly. They are in formal for a different reason to Big John @ Breakfast Big John does it so that they will engage their listener’s more. They do this by talking in their normal Yorkshire dialect. The podcast and music radio show are similar but not the same. The podcast would all be the same. The ident on the other hand is very different to the other two audio media products. The Ident does not have a form as there are just three words that are said “Were loving it”.  It is so much different because there is so little to it, there is not any dialects to speak of and the voice changes depending on which country you view it in. The jingle is pretty much the same. The Hallam FM jingle is pretty much the same as the Ident but the purpose is different. The audio book is very varied as it heavily depends on the book that is being read. If the book is something like an autobiography it will depend on the person and the character of a story. There is no way to tell without going over a specific book.
Content and meaning
The content of The Weekly Planet is they start off with their theme tune then they go to an introduction. The denotation for the intro sets the overall tone for the podcast. It makes me think that it is very informal from the first 20 seconds. They then go on to the news for the week anything to do with comic and films. They then go on about the topic of the week and they review any new films. They then go throw there fan mail and anything they have to read or reading are going to read and something that they recommend. Then if anything that was talked about earlier like a song are a part from a talk show it would be played now.
A Macdonald’s ad will start off with some music and then they talk about any offers that they are starting or just advertising there food. Then they have their iconic catch phrase and music “Am loving it”. The catch phrase that is said is said by a woman. She has a very soft toned voice. This is so it will appeal to small children more as they would like the voice.
The Hallam FM jingle has just music and the words Hallam FM. It is being said by a man. The connotation for this is rather hard as it does not fit with much. The age of the man is about right but the dominating gender for the radio station is female but the person is male that is odd.
Frequency
The Weekly Planet is aired every Monday the time is different sometime just be for 12:00AM. This is because it is a podcast and does not have a set air time, but they tend to try and set their air time the same every week. Big John @ Breakfast show is aired every day but weekends. The show is on from 06:00AM till 12:00PM. It is on all the time because it is the most popular show on Hallam FM. The MacDonald ident is on every other set off adds on radio station like Hallam FM and Capital FM.
Target audience
The target audience for the podcast of the weekly planet is anyone who like film, TV and comics. They wold be over the age of 18 and below the age of 37. They will be most likely all male because of the topics they talk about. The target audience for Big John @ Breakfast is every one in south Yorkshire. RAJRA say that the gender that listeners in more female, it was 55% women. The social grade that had the biggest reach was C2, D, and E. They are also the number one radio station and show in the south Yorkshire. The target audience is anyone who listeners to Hallam FM. That would be primarily females. There would be about 520,000 a day who would hear the jingle. According to RAJAR. The target audience is everyone. As they are trying to get everyone to go to McDonalds but the aim is trying to get the younger people in as they are the ones who are interested in fast food the most. Like the other thing the audio book will change target audience depending on the book.

Genre
The genre of The Weekly Planet is informative and entertaining. Big John @ Breakfast I an entertaining and informative radio show that plays modern contemporary music. Hallam FM is at the same audience as Big John. The Macdonald’s is aimed towards children and young adults.

Production process

The post-production process is similar for both the podcast and radio show. They both would have to line up any pre-recorded audio such as music or clips from an earlier show. On the ident and jingle or also similar. They both will have had a short production process the ident is about 20 seconds and the jingle is even shorter. They would have had to get a studio to record the voices and the music. Hallam FM would have had to make a cart wall beforehand. The audio book pre-production is finding a voice actor and hiring a studio. None of the audio media products use profanity but The Weekly Planet podcast as that is the only one that is not linked to a big commercial brand. NONE of the audio media products use racism, sexism or anything that could be taken in an offensive way. This is because of the Ofcom guidelines. All of the audio media product must avoid slander or defamation or face legal proceedings. All but The weekly planet would have rating under 18 as that is the one that has profanity.  The Weekly planet does not go over adult theme as the topic are always on light hearted themes. Because of Ofcom regulations, when a production meeting is held they would have to address the compliance for their audio product. This they would have to look at is if whatever they are making could be consider raciest or sexiest. They would to make sure that there was no profanity used. Anything that could be deemed offensive can be removed from broadcast until it meets Ofcom guild lines. Another thing that they will have to look at is if anything that is said could be deemed slander or defamation otherwise they could face legal proceedings. Things such as budgets, script and live interviews would be planned in pre-production. They would have to seek for permission for music so that they do not brake copyright law.  This is mandatory for commercial radio stations like BBC.  This may be very different for community radio as that would be ran by volunteers.
